For a professional consultant, who is passionate about his profession, and decides to work independently so that his learning curve is good, and possibilities, at least on paper, is infinite, often, the dilemma is how busy or how free he should be. Showing himself busy and picking projects only which suits him is the desire and choice of every consultant. But, on the other hand, intelligently dealing with free time is not easy either. The dilemma is whether to wait out for the project one wishes, or take whatever comes his/her way. Every individual deals with this differently. Once, a celebrity, in an interview, said his brand suffered and his earnings did not peak because he was foolish enough to take whatever came during the free period. He said he got branded and he could not shed that brand image and come out. This is an eye-opener. One should be aware of the pros and cons of choosing a path.

Many a times, interviews(in all kinds of media like print, podcasting and video shows) of celebrities give out great messages. One should have an ear to listen to such interviews. It will all look flashy and interesting tidbits. But, knowingly or inadvertently, they will give out important messages as their key learnings, and one could exactly see how it played out for them, and take cues from them to make important decisions when they are young and need to cross the same decision-making paths.

Memoirs fall into this category, and are a wonderful guide to life in toto. Since memoirs are, by definition, a historical account or biography written from personal knowledge, it is wholesome in entertainment and value simultaneously. Captain N. S. Mohan Ram in his memoir “My Ships Sailed The Seas But I Stayed Ashore”, had put it this way:

“I was afforded the opportunity to travel the world in the course of my work. I had fascinating experiences and had a great time in the service. I interacted with people of different types; noble, scheming, kind, calculating, friendly and devious. I landed into silly and scary scrapes(mostly my own making) but came out unscathed, due to a combination of quick thinking, gift of the gab and most importantly good luck.”

There, in the above lines, he has said it all, and the book has an engaging story with his life’s learning in those pages. Thus, memoirs provide for a great unwind with useful lessons for life.

Memoirs provide more value than autobiographies, in the sense that people from all  walks of life write memoirs as a contribution to readers, and hence, the connect to the reader is more. A reader can learn the future by reading such hidden past in memoirs. If a reader has the right questions, the truths in the memoirs are the places for answers, or a direction to those answers.

A slice of life and the experiences narrated with context is enough fiction for entertainment, and enough non-fiction for leaving behind impressionable values in the readers.

Feel free to share the best memoir that you have read and what you learnt in the comments below.
