SIX Sigma has become a household phrase in Bartholomew County. Originally envisioned as a business management strategy when it was introduced by the Motorola Corp. in 1986 — General Electric Chairman Jack Welch made it a company bible in the 1990s — the process has spawned numerous initiatives, many of them unrelated to business strategies.
With growing competition and shrinking margins, banks, insurance companies, mutual fund houses and other financial institutions are coming up with innovative products to attract customers, and are putting in place various mechanism to address customers’ grievances promptly.
By combining Lean Six Sigma and a top-200 customer focus, 3M improved its belt fabrication processes. The improvement team reduced defects in parts per million by a factor of 28 times as sales increased by 54%.
