No process is smooth and there are many difficulties we face in daily operations.TQM is not an exception either. The difficulties faced in TQM are:

1. Mind

2. Technology

3. People

In the book “DAILY MANAGEMENT THE TQM WAY”, the authors, Dr Yukihiru Ando and Mr Pankaj Kumar have attempted to clearly define and solve these difficulties.


There is a difference between your boss finding your fault and you finding it by yourself. You are most definitely to be pointed out by your superior for your mistakes whilst you become more aware when you find it by yourself. There is absolutely no point in hiding your mistake and not correcting it as it may show your lack of sincerity in work.

Brian L. Jonier suggests three ways to get better figures namely,

* Improve the system

* Distort the system

* Distort the figures

When you go through the definitions of all three you’ll find that Improving the system is the best option. The author strongly suggests that the employees must be provided with adequate knowledge and training to achieve the goals.

Technical Difficulty

The PDCA also known as the “Plan-Do-Check-Act” should be read as “Plan-Do-Check-Adjust” where one tries to adjust the results. In the PDC Adjust cycle, the difficulty is overcome by adjusting data with the help of past experiences or by adjusting the standards.

For example when you’re in a room where the AC is already ON but you still feel hot, you simply decrease the temperature without thinking why it is hot.

But this PDC Adjust won’t help you in a long run. You have to find a permanent solution to fix the problem. That is you can’t keep decreasing the temperature of the AC, you need to find if the windows are open!

The author points out that mere collection of data is not sufficient but one has to Act to stabilize a situation.

Organizational Difficulty

What if you get asked by someone about what you wore three months before and what you wore three days before? To which question will you be able to answer quickly?

In any organization, the difficulty must be fixed immediately and not after a long break.

The author suggests,

Using early warning indications throughout your operation, Fundamental process should not be changed, Searching for the cause immediately and not landing up in temporary solutions.
