S Mohanakrishnan graduated as a mechanical engineer and joined Sundaram-Clayton Ltd. (SCL) in 1976 as Graduate Engineer Trainee. He started his career as an engineer in Quality Assurance Department. He received his Diploma in Statistical Quality Control and Operations Research (SQC&OR) from the Indian Statistical Institute (ISI) in the year 1980-82. During this period, he coordinated with late Professor C Y Krishnamurthi of ISI in introducing QC Circles movement in SCL. He later worked as a functional head in various departments including Production, Total Quality Control (TQC), Marketing and Purchase. He headed two task forces for implementing Cellular Manufacturing and Enterprise Resource Planning. He obtained his MBA from the British Open University and had attended several training programmes such as Middle Management Programme conducted by Indian Institute of Management (A) and TQC Programme conducted by JUSE, Japan. He has visited and studied several manufacturing plants across the world such as those in Germany, UK, Japan, China, Thailand, Malaysia and in the middle east countries.
He had presented case studies and training programmes in the national forums organized by bodies such as Confederation of Indian Industries (Cil) and National Institution for Quality and Reliability (NIOR). He retired as Vice President (Manufacturing), Sundaram Clayton Ltd. in the year 2013.
